This is a detailed scan of the kidneys and the bladder. Assessment is also made of how well the bladder empties and of the aorta.
In order to obtain the best image possible you will be asked to drink 1½ pints of fluid 1 hour prior to your examination so that your bladder is full. For this examination you will be asked to lie on a couch and expose your abdomen. A water based gel will be put onto your skin and a hand held probe called a transducer will be moved over the abdomen. You may be asked to turn onto your side and hold your breath at certain points during the examination.
If you are male the size of the prostate will be assessed.
This scan normally takes 30 minutes.
