This examination looks in detail at the pelvic organs including the uterus, endometrium (womb lining) and ovaries.
In order to obtain the best image possible you will be asked to drink 1½ pints of fluid 1 hour prior to your examination so that your bladder is full.
This scan is initially performed externally. You will be asked to lie on a couch and a small amount of water based gel will be applied to the lower abdomen and a hand held probe moved over the skin.
In most women we can obtain better quality images by performing a trans-vaginal (internal) type scan. If the Sonographer feels this is necessary, and you wish to have this done, then a full explanation of the procedure will be given and you will be asked to sign a consent form. Please inform us if you have an allergy to latex.
This scan normally takes 30 minutes.
