An upper abdominal scan is a detailed assessment of the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas and kidneys.
Assessment is also made of the aorta. For this examination you will be asked to have nothing to eat prior to your examination. You may drink water only and you can take any medication as normal.
For this examination you will be asked to lie on a couch and expose your abdomen. A water based gel will be put onto your skin and a hand held probe called a transducer will be moved over the abdomen. You may be asked to turn onto your side and hold your breath at certain points during the examination.
This scan normally takes 30 minutes.
